Sabbath Rest
Hebrews 4:9-10 ESV
9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
From Verse 10, can we say? If anyone is still working, then he has not yet entered God’s rest. Does it mean, that you should not work?
What does ‘own work’ mean?
It means doing work on his own effort.
Peter walked on water. He couldn’t have walked on water, no matter how much effort he would have put into it. The only reason that he could walk on the water because he cast sight on Jesus forgot about the storm. But the moment he took his eyes from resting on Jesus, his conscious came to his own effort and he began to sink.
Peter walked. Walking a work, but walking on water is only possible resting on the Lord. How walking can be resting? How can you work and still be resting?
Verse 11 ESV
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
What seems to be a contradiction, ‘Put every effort to enter the rest’?
What work/effort should we do to enter that rest?
Shall we agree on one thing
Work = Effort
John 6:28-29 ESV
28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
The word ‘believe’ in verse 29 is the Greek word ‘
- persuasion
- reliance upon Christ for salvation,
- belief
- believe
Remember this word ‘pistis’
According to Jesus in John 6:29
Work of God = Believe in whom God Sent (Jesus)
So meaning
Work of God = Believe in Jesus
We will read back
Hebrews 4:11 ESV
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
So, we can interpret this verse as,
believe in Jesus who is the author and finisher of your Salvation to enter that rest.
A Sabbath rest is for all who believe. You enter that rest not through works done by human hands but through belief in the Lord Jesus.
