Heart of Worship

Talking about praise and worship. Who is better to talk about than David, who wrote Psalms on oh wonderful God. The friend of God, the man after God’s own heart.

Ok let jump into the Word. The Word that is life. Father speak to us through your Mighty Word.

Turn to 2 Samuel 6:14

Let me give the context. David is bringing the ark of the LORD to Jerusalem from Obed-Edom the Gittite.

Now read from verse 14 ESV

14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod.

Amplified classic translation

14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might, clad in a linen ephod [a priest’s upper garment].

Levites were carrying the ark of the LORD through the streets of Jerusalem and David was dancing with linen clothing. Who was David? The king of Israel. What was he doing? He was dancing before the LORD.

Ok. Verse 16 ESV

As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.

Who was Michal? The daughter of Saul was married to David. David loved her. Here she is not addressed as David’s wife. Here Bible addresses her Micah daughter of Saul. Ok, why is that? Think about it. Read Samuel and your understanding will grow.

Ok, what is she doing? She saw David dancing before the LORD from the window and she didn’t like it. She is probably thinking, why being king this guy dancing like a drunken guy.

When David returns home she starts to blast him like most wives do? Wives , learn to hold your tongue. Ok now jump to verse

Verse 20

And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants’ female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”

She says how like vulgar fellow david danced shamelessly uncovering.

Think of this from human wisdom. It might seem like a right thing. She is saying why are you dancing in church, why are you dancing like a drunkard, why is the music is loud. The young girls are singing and dancing loud with short dresses. Oh this is disgraceful. Is this the way you worship. Is this is the way you behave in church. Oh disgrace. She is saying that. It seems right.

Is she right?

David answers back. Oh its powerful. Oh I love it.

Verse 21-22 ESV

And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince[a] over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your[b] eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.”

He says I will do it and I will do it even more, it is before the LORD and he recounts where he came from and how the LORD is his source. It is a complete teaching on itself. Let’s come back to the heart of worship.

He basically goes against Michal. Michal spoke with human judgment like most of Christians who judge how worship is done in other churches. Now, what did happen to Micah because of this judgment she passed?

Verse 23

And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

She had no children to the day of her death. She became barren.

What have I learned? I have learned not to pass any judgment. I see only if this way of worship or dancing suits me or builds me. If yes I sing and dance too.
If not I move on without any judgment. Who am I to judge? I walk away.

So is everything right? Is everything ok? Oh, I don’t rely on my human ability to make that judgment. I let the Spirit in me guide me. If my Spirit jumps like the john the Baptist jumped in Elizabeth’s womb when she heard Mary’s greeting. She was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:41-56 So I know.

Throw your judgment. Walk by the Spirit. Let God, the Holy Spirit who lives in you be your guide and the judge.

Thank you, Jesus, for you placed your Spirit in us to guide us in all our ways.

Thank you, Jesus. Judge not abide in HIM. The author of your salvation. Jesus Christ Amen
